Inspector Mayes (joined by Freya, Thinking Tommy & Collin) finds out about the terrible mystery of the so called 'Happy Egg Company'. Does the name match the terrible truth?

Warning!: Links to distressing images.

Inspector Mayes: What do you think of when you hear the words 'Free Range'?

Freya: I think of happy chickens!

Thinking Tommy: Hmmn. Maybe hens outside in the sun, eating corn.

Collin: Happy Hens!

Inspector Mayes: Yes. Exactly. So what would you say if I said: "The free range hens are only put in free range units until they are 18-21 weeks old!

Collin: Wow! I didn't know that!

Thinking Tommy: But where are they in those 18-21 weeks?

Inspector Mayes: Good Tommy. I was about to explain that they are kept in their thousands in intensive sheds!

Freya: You are joking?! That is AWFUL!

Inspector Mayes: At The Happy Egg Company the young hens in their first weeks where electrocuted by electric wires beside the feeders and drinkers to stop them pooping on their food! I was shocked when I found that out!

Thinking Tommy: That is terrible!

Freya: I always thought that free range was ALWAYS good and nice to hens!

Collin: But that is against the Freedom Foods guidlines!

Freya: Awful! But aren't the RSPCA meant to check on the farms?

Collin: Yes. But, Inspector, what are the chickens houses like?

Inspector Mayes: Huge, big industrial sheds and-

Freya: What does industrial mean?

Thinking Tommy: Something relating to industry.

Freya: Industry?

Thinking Tommy: Selling and making stuff.

Inspector Mayes: Yes. Now. As I was saying- and there are also 'poop holes' down the sides.

Collin: Not pleasent!

Thinking Tommy: I wouldn't want to live there.

Freya: Imagine!

Inspector Mayes: Also... even when the hens are alowed out holes in the sides, are so traumatized because of their earlier life that they never venture out. It also may be hard for them to get outside; other hens may be blocking their way; or have to walk through dirty, stagnant water just to get out!

Freya: Awful!

Thinking Tommy: Look for more in our links to 'More info: Viva! website', 'Video: Viva! website' & 'Images: Google images'

Freya & Collin: Bye!!!!!!!
